La Calle Adds Caribbean Flavor to Trade Street

The aroma on the 200 block of Trade Street just got a little more international.

Elias Falero has opened La Calle: Caribbean Cuisine with a menu specific to his Puerto Rican's family heritage.

“It’s the first restaurant of its kind,” Falero said. “I wanted to bring Puerto Rican and Caribbean street food here. It’s the same kind of food you would get as home cooking in Puerto Rico.” La Calle means street.

Two doors down from Falero is Chon a Thai restaurant that opened in March and has been successful and has received excellent reviews, rebranding Trade Street as a foodie smorgasbord.

Falero said he has always had a passion for food during his years as a server, five of them with Spartanburg’s City Range. “I learned a lot working there,” he said.

It’s a family business at La Calle. Falero’s brother Elijah, uncle Richard Carrasquillo and cousin Jeramie Rivera work side-by-side.

“ There’s not many restaurants like this,” Falero said. “It’s the only full-service restaurant and bar with (authentic Puerto Rican) food around. You would have to go to Charlotte to experience what we have. When you come in we seat you and give you good customer service.”

Falero has applied for an ABC license to serve beer, wine and alcohol.

The menu features selective appetizers including a sample platter, signature dishes like Pastelon (Puerto Rican style lasagna), Pernil Asado (roast pork dinner) and Sancocho (native stew with chicken, beef and root vegetables). Flan de Queso (sweetened custard with cream cheese and caramel topping) and Budin de Pan (Style-style bread pudding) are among Falero’s dessert offerings.

“Words can not describe how I felt when we opened,” Falero said. “I love the food, the flavors and making the customers happy.”
