Stomping Grounds Announces Opening In Greer Station

(Greer, South Carolina) Stomping Grounds Coffee House and Wine Bar will open for business on January 26, 2012 at 208 Trade Street in Greer Station, Greer’s Hip and Historic Downtown.

Both a coffee house and a wine bar, Stomping Grounds, has a cozy and inviting atmosphere. There is a private dining room available for business meetings and small group gatherings

Owner, Lisa Suber stated, “When I came to Greer, I was intrigued by its charm and the positive energy of the people I met in town. I relocated because I fell in love with Greer.”

Stomping Grounds will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Stomping Grounds will serve the finest specialty coffees and a variety of gourmet beverages. The menu will incorporate pastries, bagels, and muffins for the early risers, and lunch items including Paninis, salads, soups and appetizers.

Free Wi-Fi is available at Stomping Grounds, and be sure to stop by to see "The Gallery on Trade" Art Gallery. Following the opening on Thursday, Stomping Grounds is featuring acoustic jazz on Saturday, January 28th. The Grand Opening, which will feature the launch of the Wine Bar, is scheduled for February.

The Greer Station Association recently held their annual meeting and elections at The Loft at the Davenport in historic downtown Greer.

Lindsay Stevens, Chairman for the Greer Station Association highlighted the many accomplishments of the GSA in 2011. The committees successfully completed the following tasks:

As 2011 draws to a close, the Greer Station Association can reflect upon some remarkable results during the calendar year. Please take time to review the accomplishments of the Greer Station Association below.

Events Committee: Held Bridal Expo; Spring Ladies’ Night Out and Fashion Show; GSA After Hours Socials; GSA Breakfast Meetings; GSA Mid Year Meeting; participated in the Christmas at Greer City Park event; Designed the 4th Edition of the Greer Station Ornament, and created the first edition of the Greer Station Cookbook available in January.

Property Maintenance and Improvement Committee: Participated in 4 clean ups of the Adopt A Highway program, totaling in 31 bags of trash; Auction of Boxcars Around Town, raising $1,100 for Greer Relief and Resource Agency and Greer Cultural Arts; Completion of Tankers on Trade with 5 local businesses and artist sponsored cars in Greer Station; Currently Selling Sponsorships for Trailing Down Trade.

Marketing Committee: Created the “Envision Your Business” posters to help drive business growth for all sectors as well as improve visual experience in Greer Station area; Created & maintained planned social conversations about Greer Station contributors, events and news on Facebook; 426% increase in post views over 2010 - 70+% Increase in “Likes” - Contributor Features; Co-op ads for Family Fest and OktoberFest; Event-specific radio advertising; Targeted Facebook advertising for events and the new GreerStation.com resulting in 3,331,942 IMPRESSIONS; Launched the new GreerStation.com website; Created menu-style guide to downtown dining, printed & electronic versions; Created the 2012 GSA Discount Card.

Liaisons: Completed numerous Business Visits; Conducted Parking Survey; 6 concerns brought to GSA through liaisons were addressed and resolved.

Odd Bulb Out Holiday Hunt

The Greer Station Association and the City of Greer are sponsoring the “Odd Bulb Out Holiday Hunt,” a contest that promises to have visitors scouring Greer Station for three red bulbs among thousands of white lights.

The contest was prompted by a call last year to Skipper Burns, the city’s director of public services, about a mismatched bulb in one of the Christmas decorations.

“Whether it’s redistricting or seasonal events, we’re always looking for ways to engage residents. This is one of those ideas that came from a simple mistake last year,” Burns said. “The Greer Station Association agreed that it would be a fun event for the holidays, giving everyone one more reason to enjoy a trip to Greer Station.”

Successfully completing the holiday hunt before Dec. 19 could pay off with a gift card to enjoy delicious food at Wild Ace Pizza and Pub, Café Rivera, or The Cazbah.

An entry form with rules and clues to the locations of the three odd bulbs is available at all three restaurants, Greer City Hall, or online at www.cityofgreer.org. Completed forms may be returned to collection boxes at any of the physical locations. All forms with three correct answers will be entered into a random drawing to determine the winners. Entries must be submitted by noon on Dec. 19, 2011 to qualify for a prize.

Christmas at Greer City Park

The Christmas season officially arrives in the City of Greer on Friday, December 2 when Mayor Rick Danner and Santa Claus count down to the lighting of the City Christmas Tree, the opening event of Village Hospital's Christmas at Greer City Park.

New attractions await children of all ages at the opening event, which begins at 6 p.m. at Greer City Park. It is also an opportunity to help the less fortunate by bringing canned goods and other non-perishable food items, as well as new or gently-used coats to assist those in need in the Greater Greer area. Items will be collected at the amphitheater stage throughout the evening.

From 6-7 p.m., guests will have an opportunity to learn how other cultures and countries celebrate the holiday season. "Holiday Seasons Around the World" includes the chance to visit France, Haiti, Colombia, and Germany, as well as learning about Kwanzaa and Chanukah. The first 500 visitors to each station will receive a treat.

The Foothills Philharmonic Symphony will present a program of Christmas music beginning at 6:15 in the City Park Amphitheater leading up to Santa's arrival, a reading of "The Night Before Christmas," and the tree lighting.

Santa will remain at the tree immediately following the lighting to visit and take photos with children.

Then it's off to bed for Santa because he'll be up early on December 3 for three sessions of Breakfast with Santa at the Events Center at Greer City Hall. All three sessions are sold out.

Don't miss one more chance to see Santa when he is guest of honor in the Greer Jaycees Christmas Parade on December 4. The parade begins at 3 p.m. on W. Poinsett St. and will turn on N. Main St. before ending at the J. Harley Bonds Center. Bring a warm coat or blanket, find a space on the sidewalk, and get ready to wave and share holiday cheer.

Christmas at Greer City Park is presented by Village Hospital with generous support also provided by Laurenda's Family Restaurant and Catering, Texas Roadhouse, Wal-Mart of Greer, the Greer Station Association, Upstate Wedding & Event Services, and ATD Inflatables.

BIO: Warren Stone is from Hannah, SC. He is the lead singer and plays guitar for Midway Blue. Warren has been singing since he was 18. He has opened for Jodee Messina, Lonestar, and Outshyne. His favorite TV show is Criminal Minds, favorite actor is James Dean, favorite quote is "Live Fast, Die Young", and his favorite person is his mom. "Introducing Greer Station to our many visitors is absolutely one of my favorite things. I encourage friends, neighbors, work associates and anyone I encounter to visit Greer Station to sample the wonderful restaurants and visit the many fine retail shops. A perfect evening can be dinner downtown and then a walk through beautiful City Park. Our downtown is the heart of the city - full of history and opportunity. It's a great sense of pride for me to showcase our downtown to others from across the state who are looking for examples of success for downtown revitalization. Greer Station is now a destination.

Some of my personal favorites include oysters from Great Bay Oyster House, the fillet at Strip Club 106, the lobster cigars at Cazbah, sushi and show at Mimi's, the pimento cheese appetizer at Bin 112, pizza and a beer from Wild Ace, black bean soup from Rivera's, a traditional meat and three from Mason Jar, a salad from Trade Street Café, and a good ol' breakfast like Mom used to make from Southern Thymes. However, food's not the only thing to experience in downtown. I can shop for almost any special occasion for my wife or daughters in Greer Station - the selections are great and the prices are affordable.

Under policy direction, he serves as chief administrative officer and chief financial officer for all municipal departments and operations. BIO: Tom Steele has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics with a minor in Mathematics from David Lipscomb University in Nashville TN. His father is an actual "rocket scientist" who worked for NASA at Kennedy Space Center until his retirement in 1999. Tom's brother still works at Kennedy Space Center. Tom was supposed to work at Kennedy Space Center but got sidetracked in college while doing an internship at a Top-40 radio station and he has been in radio ever since.

After starting his career at WYHY (Y107) in Nashville TN, he moved to Tampa Florida for 7 years to work at WFLZ where he was the afternoon drive on-air host and music director. In 1997 he moved to Greenville SC to co-host the Hawk and Tom Show and has been here ever since.

Tom enjoys every aspect of food, even cooking, playing video games on his computer playing with his kids. Tom and his wife Jaime have two children, their son Quinn is four years old and their daughter Samantha is 3 years old and they also have a Pomeranian named Dermot who is 5 years old.

"What I like most about Greer, SC is first of all it's home and it always will be. My roots are very deep in Greer and I like it that way. I love the high school football, and I especially miss the Greer vs. Byrnes rivalry. I love the parks and the amphitheater that we have in Greer as well. It's nice to have such an array of activities at your front door. I'm also a tennis fan so I must admit that I love the Greer tennis academy and I appreciate all the efforts of coach Mark Elliott. He is also the coach of my little girl Kristen. I always tell people where I'm from no matter if I'm in New York or Paris, France...if I'm in Tennessee or Lebanon, Beirut. And the reason I tell people all around the world about my hometown is because I truly love everything about Greer. And I want them to love it as much as I do."

BIO: Kris "Hi-Lite" Bruton did not play organized basketball before enrolling at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., where he impressed the men's head basketball coach during a pickup game and was offered a spot on the team. Hi-Lite's basketball career skyrocketed, as he went on to win the slam dunk contest during the 1994 NCAA Final Four Weekend and earn NAIA First Team All-America honors as a college senior.

Halloween Hoopla

Greer City Park will be abuzz with superheroes, princesses, and perhaps even a witch or two this Saturday, Oct. 22^nd, as Freedom Fellowship and the City of Greer offer free fun and entertainment at the annual Halloween Hoopla.

One of the most popular Halloween events in the Upstate; Halloween Hoopla annually attracts hundreds of families who come to enjoy the free candy, crafts, and entertainment which are all provided in a safe, family friendly and alcohol-free environment. Food and rides will also available at a reasonable cost.

This year's event kicks off at 4 p.m. with more than 50 candy stations along an orderly trick-or-treat line. Families will also enjoy a showing of "Scooby Doo: Legend of the Phantosaur" beginning at dusk in the City Park Amphitheater.

"First, I love downtown Greer! Having been interested in the revitalization of this wonderful City for more than 40 years, I am thrilled that it is alive and well and will be for decades to come. Yea! Having said that, it is hard to pick out just a few things I like to do in Greer so here is my not so short list...restaraunts: hamburgers at Rivera's, steak and eggs at BIN112, cheese biscuits at The Strip Club 104, blue cheese rolled grapes at The Cazbah, and shrimp and grits at The Great Bay Oyster House. Countybank Greer Station Okotberfest

The Countybank Greer Station Oktoberfest is this Saturday, October 1st from 12:00-10:00pm.

One of the most popular festivals in downtown Greer, the Countybank Greer Station Oktoberfest is coming up this fall! The festival features German oompah bands on two stages, lots of German foods, and of course, German beer and wine!
Festival goers should expect their mouths to melt from the array of German foods and desserts that will be served. Menu items include Bavarian white sausages, leberkaus, knackwurst, bratwursts, fresh baked pretzels, German funnel cakes, kettle korn, spaetzel, chipstix, glazed nuts, German chocolate cake, Black forest cake, and much more fantastic foods will be sold anywhere from $1 to $5.
Not only is the Countybank Greer Station Oktoberfest centered around German themes, it is embracing local artists and celebrating their creative works. Local artists will be displaying their creative pieces all day in downtown Greer. Work on display includes everything from oil paintings, ceramics, photography, woodwork, jewelry and much more. Festival organizers are encouraging people to come and support these artists and delight in each unique piece.
The official festival beer is the “Spaten Oktoberfest,” which is the world’s first Oktoberfest beer, created in 1872 for the Munich Oktoberfest. It will be featured at two locations within the festival – the corner of Randall and Trade Street and the corner of Victoria and Trade Street. The festival will also have Budweiser and Pepsi products.

"I would have to say my 'favorite thing' in downtown Greer is Cazbah's rooftop bar. It's a perfect atmosphere to wind down from a crazy news week and enjoy a glass or two of Riesling or Cazbah's very own White San-"Greer"-ia. And, I've got to say their pan seared duck is great. Downtown Greer is unique and if people haven't checked it out they are missing out on a really great experience. It's a short drive away and come on...you don't have to pay to park!"

The Harvest Market at Greer City Park

As thoughts turn to cooler weather and falling leaves, it's time to get ready for the return of the Harvest Market at Greer City Park. Vendor spots are still available for this year's market, which will be held Sundays from September 11 through October 9.
Vendors will line the City Park promenade offering fresh produce, prepared foods, gourmet baked goods, greenery, and hand-crafted gifts from 1-5 p.m.

"With children heading back to school, families are ready to think about autumn. Outdoor markets are a sign of that season," events coordinator Karl Rogozenski said. "The response to the first market was very positive and, with vendors making a five-week commitment to sell their goods at Greer City Park, we expect a very stable event."

Included are several wonderful vendors selling BBQ plates and anything from fresh squeezed lemonade to homemade ice cream. So grab your family and head to Greer for this national event.
This event has a new and exciting twist, Sooie’t Relief BBQ Benefit will be a "Waste Neutral" event. We will divert vegetable matter to vermicompost, worm bed. Food waste, paper, cardboard and the used charcoal will be composted. Collection of cardboard, plastic & glass for recycling will be provided. Everybody Dance

Greer will be in a dancing frenzy Friday at Tunes On Trade and the moment will be captured on camera and posted on the “So You Think You Can Dance” Facebook page.

Everybody is welcome to dance to the “Everybody Dance” salsa routine, reportedly the easiest. Sports, Spine and Industrial (SSI), City of Greer and Greer Cultural Arts is celebrating National Dance Day Friday at intermission to the summer’s final Tunes On Trade performance.

The Holiday Band will perform beach music sounds until 8 p.m. and the salsa dance will be performed with local celebrities leading the dance from the stage.

“Amanda Somers (SSI) came to us (Parks and Recreation) with the idea,” Ann Cunningham, Greer Director of P&R, said.

“Dance 4 Your Life”, an organization founded to promote dance as a part of a healthy lifestyle, has developed three dances for all experience levels in recognition of National Dance Day.

The Greer Station Association is continuing our involvement in our community by participating in the SC Department of Transportation's Adopt A Highway Program. GSA has adopted the 2 mile stretch of Hwy 14/Main Street that runs from Wade Hampton Blvd. to Buncombe Road.

Our second scheduled clean-up day is on Saturday, May 21st. We will meet in the parking lot behind the Greer Development Corporation, located at 111 S. Main Street, at 8:00am. Safety vests, gloves and trash bags will be provided by the SCDOT.

With a rich history of providing family fun for all ages, the annual Village Hospital Greer Family Fest promises to be better than ever this year, the 27th anniversary of the event. Greer is growing, and festival planners have an expanded vision for a spectacular event that reflects the growth Greer is achieving. This year’s event will feature the best of the old and add exciting new activities with the goal of being the Upstate’s favorite family festival. This two-day event features live music on the Nationwide Insurance Garfield Main Stage and the BMW Manufacturing Co. Dick Ploof Community Stage, Mitsubishi Anne Helton Creation Station, KidsZone, Food Court, and over 100 vendors throughout the festival!

GSA Update

In recent years The Greer Station Association (GSA) has implemented a new procedure to be more efficient and effective to our contributors. As you know the GSA Liaisons are personal links to assist in communication and cooperation between GSA and our partnering organizations. These Liaisons have been broken into 3 sectors: Retail, Restaurant and Service. To date, the GSA Liaisons have been made aware of the following issues: The one way sign in the alley behind Kim's Fabrics had fallen, there were trees covering the stop sign behind Citizens Building and Loan that were causing an issue for motorists, and an issue with sanitation of the streets and sidewalks due to trash and other debris.

After addressing each of these issues individually with the appropriate entity we are pleased to announce that the one way sign has been replaced, the trees blocking the stop sign have been cut back, and we have addressed the issue regarding the sanitation of our downtown streets.

Please know that in order to be a successful Downtown we must all work together. In case you are unsure of who your GSA Liaison contact is, their contact information has been provided. Please feel free to take your concerns and positive comments directly to your liaison so that we can be a more united and prosperous downtown.

With the warm weather here, now is the time to get out and enjoy all Greer Station has to offer. We have all worked very hard to make Greer Station a destination for consumers, walkers, and downtown visitors alike. We ask that you continue to keep your store fronts clean, and trash picked up on the sidewalks – this is an effort we must all work on together.

We also want to make sure that our visitors and customers have convenient parking. There is sufficient public parking in Greer Station to accommodate new businesses and new customers, as long as we designate the prime spots for visitors. Please remind your employees to park remotely so that we can leave the prime parking spots for our visitors. Do You Have A Heart?

The month of February is heart month, and to celebrate the Greer Station Association has partnered with the American Heart Association (AHA) to help bring awareness and participate in the Heart Walk on Saturday, April 2nd beginning at Greer City Park.

A few of you have already begun supporting the AHA by taking donations for the paper hearts, and that is greatly appreciated. There is still time for you to stop by the office and pick up additional hearts if you would like to continue or join in on this effort.

There are also two additional ways you can be involved in this great event:

1. Greer Station Association is forming a team to walk on Saturday, April 2nd. We are looking for walkers to join our team, and help us raise money for the AHA. Each person that raises $100 will receive a free T-shirt.

2. We want to help celebrate heart month by giving back to the AHA, to do this we have come up with a promotion "Greer Station Has a Heart". We are looking for participants to donate 10% of their proceeds on Saturday, April 2nd and Saturday, April 9th to the AHA. On Saturday, April 2nd we will have volunteers passing out flyers, and promoting the businesses that are interested in participating in this effort. We will present a check to the AHA on Friday, April 29th during our Breakfast Networking Meeting.

GSA Off to a Fast Start in 2011

The Greer Station Association’s (GSA) first Business After Hours Event of 2011 was Monday, February 28. The event was hosted by The Mason Jar, 202 Trade Street, in Greer Station, Greer’s Hip and Historic Downtown.
Allison Clark, co-owner of BIN112 and GSA Vice-Chair states, “It’s refreshing to see new faces and new enthusiasm for 2011. I’ve seen this group grow so much in the last four years and pull out energy to complete projects and put on events that no one would have imagined back in the beginning. I look forward to this coming year. I’m not sure how we can top last year, but we can try.”
Greer Relief and Resource Agency was awarded the door prize of a month long banner ad on the newly improved Greer Station Association website during the event.
The Greer Station Association is tasked with promoting Greer’s Hip and Historic downtown and the businesses located therein as well as helping to attract new retail shops, restaurants, and service providers to Greer Station. The Greer Station Association’s 2011 Program of Work includes launching a new and improved website, promoting events in Greer Station, assisting with further revitalization of Greer’s Hip and Historic downtown, and organizing regular business to business networking functions for those with a vested interest in the success of downtown Greer.

The Palmetto Retailers Education Program (PREP) is a short course that helps
reduce underage access to alcohol and tobacco products in our community
while also lowering the liability risks for businesses and their employees.
The goal of PREP is to provide managers, servers/sellers with the knowledge and skills to comply with state and establishment– level alcohol tobacco policies, and to avoid the potential consequences of failing to comply with these policies.

Two classes will be held on January 27th 2010 at Greer City Hall:
9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., and 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Class space is limited

The Image Forge for JDRF

The Image Forge, located in downtown Greer, SC has been selected to design the identity and graphics for the 2011 JDRF Black Tie Gala. The Western Carolina chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation selected The Image Forge to provide all of the designs for the event, themed, Black Tie and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

“We are honored to be selected for this project and we are pleased to donate the work in support of the foundation,” says owner and founder, Martin Miller. “Our family has close ties to the work of JDRF and it’s rewarding to be able to make a contribution like this,” he adds.

The Image Forge presented three concepts for review by the Western Carolinas chapter of JDRF, based in Greenville and led by Campbell Manning. Regarding the designs and alluding to the tone of the movie, Ms. Manning said, “I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the first concept! It is supremely and utterly perfect!” Regarding the work from The Image Forge she added that “…we are beyond pleased and they have exceeded our wildest expectations…”

The Image Forge designed the overall identity for the event and applied the idea to several printed pieces including a poster, save-the-date cards, invitations and RSVP mailers. Fine art versions of the original designs were also printed and will be auctioned at the gala event. The event is schedule for February 26, 2011 at the Greenville Marriott.

The Greer Station Association (GSA) is having its Annual Meeting on Friday, December 17^th at 7:45am at The Davenport, 230 Trade Street. We will be voting for the 2011 GSA Board of Advisors at this meeting as well as giving a year end report. Everyone is encouraged to attend. If you can’t make it, send a representative from your company. Please RSVP by Monday, December 13^th.
You have also been invited to attend a Holiday Drop-in given by the Partnership for Tomorrow, Greer Development Corporation, Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, and the Greer Station Association on Friday, December 17th from 4-6pm at Grace Hall, 108 Trade Street. Christmas at Greer City Park

The Christmas season officially arrives in the City of Greer when emcee Mike Lowery dons his festive vest, the sound of carols fills the amphitheater, Santa arrives, and Mayor Rick Danner counts down to the lighting of the City Christmas Tree. Local choirs, performers from Southern Dance Connection, and Miss Greater Greer and Miss Greater Greer Teen will also be on hand. Children are invited to enjoy free inflatable fun on the City Park lawn courtesy of ATD Inflatables. And all are encouraged to bring one or more canned food items and coats to assist the needy in the Greater Greer area.

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Returns to Greer City Park

Adults have a treat in store this Halloween as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" returns to the Greer City Park Amphitheater for one showing on Friday, Oct. 29.

The campy film, which has earned fans around the world since its release in 1975, drew more than 300 individuals to its 2009 late-night debut in the park amphitheater.

The Greer showing is restricted to viewers ages 18 and over. Pre-show fun begins at 10 p.m. and the film will begin at 11 p.m. Admission is free, while concessions and "first timer kits" with audience participation props will be available for purchase.

A late night theater tradition for many baby boomers (one that includes dressing like characters and flinging such items as frankfurters and toast at the screen), the 1975 film’s catchy soundtrack includes such memorable songs as "The Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite," and "Planet Schmanet, Janet."

The Greer City Park showing is made possible by title sponsor Langford Electric and additional support from Texas Roadhouse and Wal-Mart of Taylors.

Halloween Hoopla

Halloween Hoopla is this Saturday, October 23rd, at Greer City Park. Children and families are invited to the park between 4-8 p.m. to receive free candy and enjoy an evening of entertainment.

Children can trick-or-treat along the candy lane inside park provided by volunteers from Freedom Fellowship, and a new addition to this year’s event will be the showing of the movie "Casper" in the amphitheater.

Additional evening activities include children's entertainment on the amphitheater stage, karaoke and a kid's craft station.

The event is organized by the Freedom Fellowship Church and the City of Greer.

Fall Fashion Show

It's Girls' Night Out once again! Thursday, October 7^th at 7pm Greer Station will present “Girls’ Night Out” at Poinsett West Gardenalia.
Come out and enjoy the latest fall fashions from Talloni, Pink Paisley, Maiale, Chelsea’s Ladies Appareal, Zuzu’s Fashion Replay, and Smith and James Men’s Clothing. There will also be hair and make-up demonstrations, hors d'oeuvres and wine, door prizes, and a great atmosphere.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. We will also be taking canned food donations for Greer Relief.
